Can my husband's employer reduce his hours based on his sex?

My husband (he is a contractor) was told by the company that contracts him for work that he is not being given hours because some other employees who are women need the money more than he does because their spouse(s) are unemployed. My husband works in California for a company that is based in the UK. The person that does the scheduling of their hours is located in California as well. There are about 10 other contractors in this state as well. Is this legal? What can be done to stop this? Can my husband's employer reduce his hours based on his sex?
What you described is not sex discrimination. The people getting the extra work are not getting it because of their sex, they are getting it because of their situation. It may be unfair, but I don't think it is illegal. And that only applies if your husband was an employee. As a contractor, the company can award its business to whom ever it chooses. Can my husband's employer reduce his hours based on his sex?
He is a contractor. The person is NOT his employer and is NOT obligated to HIRE him for any jobs. While unusual, choosing contractors based on 'need' is completely legal. Based on your own statement, sex is NOT the reason for the choice.
